As with so many of the new turf fields that were constructed over the past decade or so, Nugent can handle just about any type of athletic contest, and often will host three varsity competitions on a Saturday afternoon.

 Local high schools lead charge in fight against concussions

Editor’s note: At last month’s concussion seminar held by the Eastchester Blue Devils, youth coaches in the area were educated by Lawrence Hospital personnel on the dangers of head injuries to younger athletes. This week, The Town Report follows with a report about new technologies used by local high schools to combat the effects of head injuries.


In his words:
Fred Castiglia, who played football for Harrison in the 1950s, on attitudes towards concussions during his playing days:
“I ran the ball a lot as a back, so I took a lot of hard hits. I really never remember having a concussion—ringers, maybe…I got my bell rung a few times, but I was lucky with all the hits I took. Really, I don’t think they paid that much attention to concussions in that day. I mean, if you were really bad, they would take you out of the game, but nobody really thought about it. If you got stunned, you kept playing and eventually it would go away.”

 Youth baseball staple bestowed first-pitch honor

If there’s one thing that Al Tarcinale hates, it’s when his age gets misreported. The Scarsdale resident has been on this earth for nearly a century, but heaven forbid someone mistakenly reports that the longtime baseball man is 99 years old. As Tarcinale himself states, that just simply isn’t the case.

He’s 99 years young.

The reason Tarcinale’s age has become something of a sticking point over the last few weeks is that the longtime Westchester resident has found himself at the center of some pretty momentous events.

Self-proclaimed “99-years-young” Eastchester native Al Tarcinale was selected to throw out the honorary first pitch at the 2010 Little League World Series, beginning this week in Williamsport, Penn.
